Leaves: Deeply lobed / pinnatifid leaves that resemble palm fronds. Juvenile leaves are less cut; as the plant matures, the lobes become deeper.
-
Growth habit: Climbs using aerial roots. If given support (e.g. a moss pole, trellis), it can grow tall (sometimes over 6 feet in favorable conditions). If not supported, leaves may be smaller and less impressive.
Care Requirements
| Factor | Ideal Condition |
|---|---|
| Light | Bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sun (especially afternoon), which can scorch the leaves. Too little light leads to leggy growth and less leaf depth. |
| Water | Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Let the top part (1–2 inches or so) dry out between waterings. Overwatering risks root rot. |
| Soil / Medium | Well-draining potting mix; often mixes including bark, perlite, peat. Slightly coarse/airy soil helps. |
| Humidity | Medium to high humidity preferred (≈ 60-80%). Regular misting or other means of raising ambient humidity helps. |
| Temperature | Can get pretty large when climbing; height can exceed 6 feet if conditions are good. Width/spread depends on how mature it is, how much support it has, and how it’s pruned. |
-
Mainly grown for its foliage — the dramatic leaf shape is the main appeal.
-
Toxicity: Like many philodendrons, it’s toxic if ingested (contains calcium oxalate crystals). Pets/humans should not eat it, and handling may cause mild irritation.
